Today’s topic: Top Ten Favorite New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2012

It’s a mouthful but it is a good one!  This was hard I read almost 25 new authors this year! I went with alphabetical order because if you asked me to rank them it would take me hours and then I would change my mind.

1. Jussi Adler-Olsen

Far outside of the realm of my normal Adler-Olsen is a foreign author who writes suspense.  He also writes fantastic realistic characters that are full of surprises.  He is well established across the Atlantic but is just beginning over here. Definitely a series to watch. His website.

2. Jonathan Auxier

The first two are the only men on this list but they are very different.  Auxier uses his witty humor in his debut novel in which he manages to provide vivid descriptions with the unique aspect of a blind protagonist.  I look forward to future endeavors. His website: The Scop.

3. Heather Dixon

I’m guessing everyone already knows the debut kick I’ve been on this year so I will try not to point every single one out.  Dixon got my attention with her retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses but she definitely help it when I saw her sketches and humor on her blog: Story Monster.  I hope that she will write more but even if she doesn’t she will stay on my radar for any sort of project.

4. Karen Healey

The two books I read were set in New Zealand and it was a nice reminder that real unfamiliar settings can be terribly intriguing just like the imagined ones.  Throw in some new to me mythology and I am hooked.  Her upcoming novel will expand her into Science Fiction.  Her website.

5. Lish McBride

William C. Morris Debut Award Finalist (2011) is the kind of honor that I didn’t used to pay much attention to but I think the mark is that this does not even feel like a debut.  McBride presents her quirky tale without hesitation.  This is a series that I will not be able to keep my paws off of it.  Her website.

6. Erin Morgenstern

I’m sure this name will be on a lot of lists.  Morgenstern wrote a novel that people can’t decide what to call it because they all love it so much that they want to put it under their favorite genre.  No matter what you call it, it was a fantastic ride and I am one of many wondering where she will take us next.  Her website.

7. Eilis O’Neal

Her first name is pronounced A-lish.  Her debut is just the sort of thing I gobble up, especially that I would have gobbled up at the intended age.  There aren’t whispers on the wind yet but I hope that there might be more to come from her brain.  Her website.

8. Laini Taylor

As much as I find my tendency to start new series dangerous it is also nice when you fall in love with a brand new-to-you author to know that there is already more on the way! I am greatly impressed when someone makes something that is urban fantasy but with its own completely creative world building. Her website.

9. Victoria Schwab

It may seem a little crazy but I already think I am going to like her next book even more then I liked the first!  I think The Archived is probably one of my most anticipated books, especially if you don’t compare it to series. Her website.

10. Maggie Stiefvater

I loved my dive into Stiefvater so now I need to go backwards and forwards with her work!  It’s hard to even describe the depth of story telling.  The crafting of the characters and the world and… my utter obsession.  I think next I want to read The Raven Boys and then maybe we’ll work backwards.  Her website.
