Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten

A meme from the Broke and the Bookish.

Today’s topic: Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist (if you could make authors write about these things you would. Could be a specific type of character, an issue tackled, a time period, a certain plot, etc.)

1. More standalone YA fantasy – no explanation needed.

2. Gender bending – as in The Song of the Lioness, every time I see a mention of a new one they apparently reveal the gender to too many people too soon.

3. Characters who go through multiple relationships – So many times we only see a single relationship and it is first and last. Real people think they are in love with this guy but then they break up and then they meet another guy or realize the guy who has always been there *cough*George*cough* is wonderful. Even then the relationships aren’t perfect. (Love triangles do not count.) (Yes, it feels like all my wishes are for more people like Tamora Pierce.)

4. Rebellious princesses – Think The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede or even The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch or The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley.

5. Thieves – I love thieves but they very rarely get the limelight. Normally they are secondary characters, maybe even love interests but really the main thief protagonist i can think of is from Take a Thief by Mercedes Lackey.

6. Vampires – That aren’t shiny. I read all of the Twilight series. At first I liked it but I grew dissatisfied. I really love Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I also enjoyed The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I haven’t read any Vampire Academy. I just can’t convince myself.

7. Modern Fantasy – I don’t want to say Urban Fantasy because that is a particular thing that isn’t lacking, for instance I loved Downpour by Kat Richardson. There are a lot in that vein though. What I really want is more things along the lines of The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater which has just a dash of fantasy, it’s alternate universe almost because the mythical creatures are not a secret.

8. Bookish girls – I can’t think of a good example, maybe they don’t work that well in the books I read but I would love to see someone more like me.

9. Animal companions – A loyal dog, a magic cat, a crazy wolf pet, a horse with personality (Hello again, Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley)

10. Magic – Good old traditional spells rarely make it into YA lately. They have their niche in middle grades and adult, why not YA?
